As part of our ongoing expansion, we are seeking a dynamic and strategic Head of Health & Safety to lead our commitment to health, safety and wellbeing across all operations. This senior leadership role is integral to driving our ‘zero harm’ vision and maintaining the highest standards of compliance, risk management and safety culture across our national projects.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead the development, implementation and continual improvement of the company’s Health & Safety strategies aligned with MAP Group’s values and operational goals.
  • Take strategic responsibility for compliance with statutory and client-specific safety standards including ISO 45001, ISO 14001 and relevant NHSS requirements.
  • Oversee a nationwide team of H&S Managers and Advisors to foster a high-performance, safety-driven culture.
  • Act as the principal advisor to the CEO and Board of Directors on health and safety risks, trends and strategic initiatives.
  • Champion proactive risk management and ensure that all H&S risks are systematically identified, assessed and mitigated across all workstreams.
  • Lead investigations into serious incidents or accidents ensuring effective root cause analysis and implementation of corrective and preventative actions.
  • Collaborate with operational leaders to embed safe systems of work and behavioural safety initiatives throughout the business.
  • Monitor, report and present accurate H&S performance data and KPIs at board and executive levels.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, enforcing authorities and industry bodies to promote best practices and collaborative safety culture.
  • Stay up to date with legal, industry and regulatory changes and ensure that MAP Group is positioned to remain compliant and forward-looking.
  • Oversee and support external audits, certifications, and internal assurance programmes.

Experience and Key Skills

Essential:

  • Extensive senior-level experience leading H&S functions across complex, multi-site operations – ideally within utilities, telecommunications or infrastructure sectors.
  • NEBOSH Diploma (or equivalent Level 6+ H&S qualification); CMIOSH status.
  • Chartered status with IOSH or equivalent professional body.
  • Proven track record of managing H&S strategy, compliance, audits and operational delivery.
  • Experience in team leadership, mentoring and development within a safety-critical environment.
  • Skilled in incident investigation, root cause analysis and performance reporting.
  • In-depth knowledge of applicable UK H&S legislation and industry standards.
  • Strong interpersonal, influencing and communication skills.
  • Highly competent with data analysis and safety management systems (SMS).

Desirable:

  • Experience within fibre, telecoms or utilities infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of ISO 9001, 14001, 45001 standards and NHSS schemes.
  • Strong understanding of behavioural safety programmes and cultural change initiatives.
